Ijo dan Emas is the second Aniwayang project by Daud Nugraha and Aniwayang Studio. It is an adaptation of the popular Central Javanese folktale, Timun Mas, rewritten from a different perspective by Andina Subarja, telling the story from Buto Ijo’s point of view, who is often misunderstood as the villain. Ijo dan Emas brings a fresh take on Indonesian folklore.
The production technique of Ijo dan Emas is similar to that of Desa Timun, but with a unique innovation—the use of color in the puppets. This visual adaptation aligns with the title (Ijo and Emas, meaning “Green” and “Gold”) and the characters (Buto Ijo and Timun Mas). Green and yellow hues are carefully incorporated into the intricate cutouts of the main character puppets, introducing a new artistic element to this traditionally shadow-focused medium.
The origin of Ijo dan Emas is inspired by the Central Javanese folk tale Timun Mas, which tells the story of a brave young girl (Timun Mas) who fights against an evil giant (Buto Ijo).
In Ijo dan Emas, this popular tale has been rewritten from a different perspective by Andina Subarja. Told from the point of view of Buto Ijo—misunderstood as a villain—Ijo dan Emas brings a fresh twist to Indonesian folklore.
